Paris, Sept 30 (2025) – Satellite operator Eutelsat is gearing up for a significant funding boost as it looks to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink in the fast-growing satellite internet market. Shareholders are expected to approve a €1.5 billion capital increase, with France taking the lead as the biggest investor and the United Kingdom holding on to its stake.Starlink

France Leads, Europe Watches

France will inject €750 million into Eutelsat, increasing its ownership to nearly 30%. Meanwhile, the UK will contribute €163 million, keeping its share at about 11%. Other notable investors include Bharti Space (backed by Indian billionaire Sunil Mittal), shipping giant CMA CGM, and the French insurer-backed Fonds Stratégique de Participations.

President Emmanuel Macron has called on more EU member states, especially Germany, to join this initiative. According to Macron, supporting Eutelsat is not just about business, but about European sovereignty in space communications.

Europe’s Push for Independence

The push for funding comes at a time when Europe is increasingly concerned about its reliance on U.S. satellite networks like Starlink. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has further highlighted the strategic importance of secure and independent satellite internet services.

French MEP Christophe Grudler explained:

> “France’s decision is a strong political act. But it cannot stop here. Germany and other member states must also step in. One country alone cannot carry this continental ambition.”

A Temporary Lifeline or a Real Challenger?

Analysts believe the capital boost will provide Eutelsat with a temporary lifeline, but long-term success depends on more European countries committing funds. Without stronger backing, the company could struggle to match Starlink’s vast satellite network and global coverage.

Stock Market Reaction

Eutelsat’s shares, which had fallen to record lows earlier this year, have seen a rebound amid speculation that it could replace Starlink in Ukraine’s connectivity plans. The European Commission has confirmed ongoing talks with member states about future cooperation.

Outlook

While the funding marks a turning point for Eutelsat, experts caution that this is only the first step. To truly rival Starlink, Europe will need a united approach, deeper investments, and stronger political will.
