Indian Railways Introduces TAG 2026: 122 New Trains Launched, Speeds Increased on 549 Routes to Cut Travel Time Nationwide

Indian Railways has unveiled one of its most ambitious timetable overhauls in recent years with the rollout of the “Timetable of Trains – TAG 2026”, a nationwide initiative aimed at faster journeys, improved punctuality, and enhanced passenger convenience. Under this revised framework, the railways have introduced 122 new trains and increased the operational speed of 549 existing services, significantly reducing travel time across some of India’s busiest corridors.

The TAG 2026 reform reflects a strategic shift in how Indian Railways plans, schedules, and operates passenger services. Rather than focusing solely on adding trains, the new timetable emphasizes time efficiency, route optimization, and better utilization of existing infrastructure, ensuring that passengers reach their destinations more reliably and quickly.

Faster Trains, Shorter Journeys

A key highlight of TAG 2026 is the substantial reduction in journey durations on hundreds of routes. According to official data, out of the 549 trains whose speeds have been enhanced, 376 services will now reach their destinations 5 to 15 minutes earlier, while 105 trains will save between 16 and 30 minutes. For longer routes, 48 trains will cut travel time by 31 to 59 minutes, and 20 long-distance services will now be over an hour faster than before.

These improvements are not limited to premium categories. Several Mail, Express, and passenger trains have also been upgraded to superfast status, reflecting a broader effort to improve everyday rail travel for millions of commuters.

122 New Trains Strengthen Connectivity

As part of the revised timetable, Indian Railways has added 122 new trains, significantly expanding connectivity across regions. The new introductions include 60 Mail and Express trains, which continue to form the backbone of long-distance travel. In addition, 28 Vande Bharat trains have been introduced to strengthen semi-high-speed rail connectivity, while 26 Amrit Bharat trains aim to provide affordable and modern travel options.

The expansion also includes Rajdhani, Jan Shatabdi, Humsafar, and Namo Bharat rapid rail services, catering to diverse passenger segments and travel needs. Some of these services have been introduced under the Time on Demand (TAG-TOD) model, allowing railways to respond more dynamically to passenger demand.

Zone-Wise Upgrades Across the Network

The impact of TAG 2026 is visible across nearly all railway zones, with a clear focus on high-density and high-demand routes. The South Western Railway emerged as a major beneficiary, with eight new trains launched and 117 services receiving speed upgrades. The North Western Railway added 12 new trains and increased speeds on 89 routes, while the Western Railway introduced 10 new services and accelerated 80 trains.

Other zones such as Southern Railway, Northern Railway, East Central Railway, and North East Frontier Railway also saw notable enhancements, including new trains, route extensions, and faster schedules. This nationwide approach highlights Indian Railways’ intent to create a more balanced and efficient network rather than concentrating improvements in select regions.

Focus on Congested Routes and Passenger Experience

Railway officials indicated that special attention was given to congested corridors, where even small time savings can significantly improve overall network efficiency. Zones with heavy passenger traffic—such as SWR, NWR, WR, and SR—played a central role in implementing these speed improvements.

By reducing halts, optimizing crossings, and refining operational planning, TAG 2026 aims to deliver a smoother travel experience. For passengers, this translates into shorter journeys, fewer delays, and better schedule adherence, making rail travel more competitive with road and air transport.

A Step Toward a Modern Rail Network

The TAG 2026 timetable is more than a routine update—it represents a structural change in how Indian Railways approaches passenger mobility. With rising expectations, growing urbanization, and increasing travel demand, the focus is now firmly on speed, reliability, and service quality.

As Indian Railways continues to modernize rolling stock, electrify routes, and upgrade signaling systems, timetable reforms like TAG 2026 are expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of rail travel in India.
